Show professional curiosity about the person, not the self-harm.
You might say, “Let’s manage the wounds first and then see if we can understand what’s going on for you?”
You might ask…
“How are things?”
“How are you feeling?”
“What do you need?”
TIP: use active listening, e.g. ask “have I understood?”
